Bringing dance to the Queen’s Gallery

In 2018, the Royal Collection Trust (RCT) approached Akademi South Asian Dance UK to commission four groups to create and perform a dance at the Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace. The event, which was supported by the Bagri Foundation, tied in with the ‘Splendours of the Subcontinent’ exhibition and was designed to show the gallery as open to all and to encourage participation and new audiences.

Build-up to the big day

Over five months, Chocolate Films made this film for the Learning and Outreach department of the RCT by going to the four groups’ rehearsals and talking to the leaders and participants, who were all from different backgrounds and included hospital patients, children and dancers, up to the age of 97. The organisers of the event spoke about their plans for the day, while many of the participants also contributed, as did visitors to the show on the day.
