The RCA is the world’s top art & design university, offering postgraduate degrees to over 2000 students across three campuses in London: South Kensington, Battersea and White City. The RCA aims to shape artists who shape the world, and attracts students from over 70 countries.
In 2018, Chocolate Films won the tender to produce a trailer for the RCA’s graduate show. This first successful collaboration led to a steady stream of projects with the College, including filming David Hockney in LA, documenting a collaboration with CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research, Switzerland) and the RCA Show 2019.
In 2019, Chocolate Films was commissioned by the RCA to create the film of their annual show for the second year in a row. The goal of this year’s film was to immerse viewers in the experience of coming to the Show, through smooth shots through the venue, close-ups of the art and tracking text for context. The exhibition and film feature the very best of emerging contemporary art and design practice, by over 800 of their post-graduate students.
The RCA Show is where talent spotters discover the stars of the future. This film for the 2018 edition showcases work from the best young talent in art, design, filmmaking and innovation. The RCA is at the forefront of creativity and that had to be reflected in our work. We employed a number of different filming techniques including hyperlapses and sliders.
In 2018, the Royal College of Art partnered with CERN, The European Organization for Nuclear Research, for an innovative project that brought together science, technology and design under the title of The Grand Challenge. This film is designed to demonstrate how the RCA works with other organisations to foster people’s imagination and to show how different disciplines can crossover to create something special.
This film series included shorts about what makes an artist, interviewing award-winning artists Tracey Emin, Asif Kapadia, James Dyson, Thomas Heatherwick and David Hockney. For the Hockney film, our crew flew out to Los Angeles with a representative from the RCA. Together they had an amazing day at Hockney‘s house, including lunch with the master himself. The 3-minute film and social media clips had over 150,000 views on Facebook.
