Heroes of London
In 2018, to celebrate the achievements of women, the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan in collaboration with the Tate Collective launched ‘Behind Every Great City’. Twenty women and non-binary artists were chosen to create public artworks around the city to celebrate relatively unsung women who’d made a significant cultural impact on London. The subjects included suffragettes, architects, and artists such as Pauline Boty and Madge Gill.
The female gaze
An all-female crew of Chocolate Films filmmakers shot all the artworks and 20 artists talking about their inspiration. The shoot took place at locations as diverse as Liverpool Street Station, Hammersmith Underpass and the Portobello Road. They also filmed Deputy Mayor Justine Simons explaining the background to the project.
